Really annoying missing CD drives in Windows XP & Vista

It really annoys me when they go missing, but it’s ok as there is a simple fix. If you used to have a CD or DVD drive listed under ‘My Computer’ but the icon has just disappeared, don’t panic, just do this:

1. Fire up regedit. (If you don’t know what that is, stop now and get some more help first).
2. Look for – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>┬áSYSTEM, and then CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} – make sure you pick this exact one as there will be loads with very similar names. (the one you want should be near the top of the list).
5. In the right pane, delete the entries called ‘UpperFilters’ and ‘LowerFilters’.
6. Restart your PC. When you get back top your desktop you should get the standard ‘found new hardware’ message, then after that is finished you should be good to go.

If you find that you can now see the drive icon but nothing plays, you probably need a firmware update. Head over to the manufacturers site and get hunting for your model.

Thanks. I love you too.

Peace out.
