Link swaps - not what they used to be

April 15th, 2008 Posted in Technical

Hmmmm…. It might be time to change your search engine marketing plans. I’ve just read an interesting article about some changes to the way Google handles reciprocal links.

It turns out that all that time you have spent writing to relevant sites asking for a 2 way link swap may have been wasted as Google now marks you down if you have links going both ways, because it realises that these links have been manufactured purely for the benefit of SE rankings and therefore presumes that your content must be rubbish. That is a pretty radical change that is going to affect everyone I know, and every site I have put together.

Oh well, I’d better find some skint bloggers to write some ‘genuine’ articles about my sites instead, in return for a couple of pennies. Can that really be a better way to do things?

(BTW, that article is from Vertical Response, an email marketing company that provide a pretty damn good service. They are US based, so it’s not perfect for us UK types, but they are so much cheaper than the UK services it is unbelievable and I have never had a problem with them. And they didn’t pay me to say that!)

You like?

Did you find this interesting or useful? Then maybe you could buy me a beer?
If you though it was rubbish or boring, then I’m sorry and you don’t need to bother.
