Android 2.1 on my T-Mobile G2 (HTC Hero), at last!

After waiting about half of my lifetime for T-Mobile (UK) to release the Android 2.1 update for my G2 (also known as the HTC Hero), it’s finally here. They haven’t actually announced it, or put it on any kind of download page, but you can get it if you follow these simple steps:

Install HTC Sync (Note this is not Windows 7 compatible, which is very annoying*).

Download and install/re-install the November 09 rom update (note that just doing a factory reset will not suffice, it needs to be a fresh installation).

Wait for it to finish and (slowly) reboot. After the first setup screen you should be offered a download. Accept this and install it. (It’s only a small one, not the full upgrade).

Install that, wait for boot cycle again.

After this startup/setup screen you should be offered another download. This is the biggie. Follow the instructions and download and install that one too.

After a final reboot cycle – yay, you have Androind 2.1. Now how about 2.2? Come on T-Mobile, get your ass in gear!

* = I used ‘Windows XP Mode’ on my Win 7 PC to get this installed. It makes it a bit more fiddly doing it this way with a virtual machine, but it can be done. Just remember to switch off the ‘integration features’ and manually attach the USB device, remembering to re-attach it every time it reboots.

  1. I’m running 2.2 on my SIM Free HTC Hero, it’s not the official release but runs very well.

However I’m not sure that you can gain root access after the 2.1 update.
