Entourage on an SBS domain – inside the LAN

February 9th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Email, Mac, SBS, Technical

OK, as a follow on to my post about hooking Entourage up to an SBS server from outside of the LAN, here is a quick guide on how to do it if you are actually sitting on the same network.

As with all things that combine a Mac and an SBS domain, this caused me a few sleepless nights and lots of general agro, so hopefully I can save a few minutes of hair-tearing for someone else by posting the details of my setup: More »

Shutdown Windows from the command line

January 9th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in SBS, Technical, Windows

I had an odd problem with an SBS 2003 box that just would not shutdown the other day. A quick bit of research taught me that it can be done from the command line, which I totally didn’t know (‘cos I’m an idiot): More »

IE8 – force your site to display in compatibility mode

January 9th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in Technical, Vista, Windows

If you have just seen your site in IE8 and you feel like crying because all of your hard work has been thrown out of the window, don’t rush into that re-design just yet. You can force IE8 to act like IE7 while you work on a full time fix, by just including this in the header of your pages(s):

<meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=EmulateIE7″ />

This will get round some of the new behaviour. More »

Really annoying missing CD drives in Windows XP & Vista

January 8th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Technical, Vista, Windows

It really annoys me when they go missing, but it’s ok as there is a simple fix. If you used to have a CD or DVD drive listed under ‘My Computer’ but the icon has just disappeared, don’t panic, just do this:

1. Fire up regedit. (If you don’t know what that is, stop now and get some more help first).
2. Look for – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SYSTEM, and then CurrentControlSet. More »

If you (like me) have some public folders that everyone needs to have full control over for some reason, then you (like me) run the risk of having some of your public folders ‘accidentally’ deleted by stooopid users (like me?).
